Why We Created BookABuoy

I'm a Kiwi yachtsman and software engineer who built BookABuoy after experiencing firsthand how difficult it could be to find and contact mooring owners while travelling New Zealand by water.

During one of my sailing trips, what should have been a simple search for a buoy or mooring quickly turned into a frustrating rabbit hole of phone calls, uncertainty, and outdated information. That experience sparked the idea for BookABuoy.

Today, myself and a small team operate BookABuoy from the Coromandel Peninsula, where we provide support, develop the platform, and live the boating lifestyle ourselves.

We work directly with marinas, harbourmasters, yacht clubs and individual mooring owners across the country — from Northland and the Bay of Islands down through Auckland, the Coromandel, Tauranga and the Marlborough Sounds — to bring more of New Zealand's coastline online and bookable.

Our passion is simple — to make it easier for everyone to explore New Zealand by water.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about booking and listing on BookABuoy.

How do I book a mooring?

Search for a location and dates, select your mooring, choose your payment method and confirm. For instant bookings you're confirmed immediately. For approval bookings, your card is held while the host reviews your request.

Is my payment safe?

Yes. All payments are processed by Stripe, the same technology used by Amazon and Uber. Your card details are never stored on our servers.

Do I need insurance to book?

Yes — you must have valid vessel insurance to book on BookABuoy. You'll need to upload your certificate in your profile before booking.

How do I list my mooring and get paid?

Switch to Host Mode from your profile and add a listing in a few steps — location, photos, vessel limits, pricing and booking type. Once a booking is completed, your earnings (booking total minus a flat $5 BookABuoy fee) are paid to your nominated bank account.

What is the BookABuoy fee?

BookABuoy charges a flat $5 per night booking fee. This covers platform costs, payment processing, and customer support. Listing is free.
